Official describes sex abuse, forced marriage at Texas polygamy sect

APRIL 8 — Forced marriage and sexual abuse were "pervasive" inside the Texas compound of a polygamist sect raided last week by investigators, according to child welfare officials seeking custody of more than 400 children removed from the religious group's sprawling YFZ Ranch.

In a harrowing District Court affidavit, a Child Protective Services investigator charged that the children were placed in risk of "emotional, physical and/or sexual abuse" at the Fundamentalist Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints facility, where female children were groomed to "accept spiritual marriages to adult male members of the YFZ Ranch resulting in them being sexually abused." Similarly, investigator Lynn McFadden noted, young men on the YFZ Ranch were "spiritually married to minor female children," with whom they engaged in sexual relationships, becoming, in the process, sexual "perpetrators."

The McFadden affidavit, which was filed today in court, was provided to TSG by the San Angelo Standard-Times. A copy of the document can be found below. The government raid on the compound was triggered after a 16-year-old mother called a family violence center and reported that she had been abused by her 50-year-old husband and was seeking help in departing the property, according to the affidavit. The girl, who has yet to be located, identified her abuser as Dale Barlow, a 50-year-old registered sex offender who pleaded no contest last year to conspiring to have sex with a minor. (6 pages)

Free the Texas 463 (Strikeout) 464!

All you civil rights organizations, where were you when Texas destroyed a community of nearly 1000 by “liberating” 463 (464 with the newborn) healthy well-behaved children to Child Protective Services with a history of abuse scandals? The Texas comptroller found up to 28% of children under foster care suffered abuse in Texas and other cities. 48 children died under the care of CPS in 2005, which means 5 of those children may die under watch of CPS over 10 years. One infant was already hospitalized, while chickenpox quickly spread under refugee camp conditions. Bones were broken while kids were rounded up the authorities, then the witch hunters used it to claim even more abuses.

This is a civil rights violation of biblical proportions. Neither King Herod nor the Japanese wartime internment broke up families like this. Only the Australians snatching of an entire generation of aborigine children from their parents was worse. The girls and toddlers were sobbing "Mommy don't let them take me away, I want to stay". The homesick kids shook their heads when reporters asked if they were happy, they crossed out “Welcome Guests” and wrote in “prisoners” Did anybody think that seizing kids with armed troops and putting them into a refugee camp / orphanage might be an abusive, violent and frightening situation? The Houston Chronicle reported that mental health workers blasted CPS for traumatizing children and what appeared to be good mothers, many were dismissed for being “too compassionate”. Instead of finding and arresting guilty abusers, they arrested the kids.

Contrast the pictures of happy campers at www.captivefldschildren.org to the state’s total blackout of pictures and video. All of Short Creek, Arizona with 263 children was arrested for 2 years in 1953 before charges were dropped. Utah Attorney General Mark Shurtleff stated it was wrong to take away every 6-month-old girl or boy because they MIGHT grow up to be a child bride or husband 12 or 30 years from now. When CPS originally intended to permanently remove every child and got the judge to rule this religion is unfit to raise children, what’s the point of respecting religious rules regarding fresh food, the color red, clothing and TV?

An invalid search warrant was based on a call traced to a known crank caller, a community of 700 is called “one household”, imminent harm is declared based on seeing a few regnant teens and asking 8 yr olds about heir beliefs, yet they still haven’t found even one slam-dunk violation of the law. The ACLU says "exposure to a religion's beliefs may not constitutionally be labeled abuse." Ronald L. Trowbridge states "they should be returned with reasonable haste.” If the United Nations was run like Texas, they would be tracking down and removing children of every Hmong, Africans and Asians who have ever arranged marriages, performed female circumcision or allow high rates of teen pregnancy. If I were judge, I’d send that fraud Rozita Swinton and the CPS people to jail and get the FDLS mothers to clean up the CPS. This conservative may be the first, but shouldn’t be the only Asian American who has condemned this atrocity and called for releasing the children.

All children must be proficient, but NAEP defines proficiency at 70th percentile!

This is the story of educational romanticism in elementary and secondary schools —its rise, its etiology, and, we have reason to hope, its approaching demise.

Educational romanticism consists of the belief that just about all children who are not doing well in school have the potential to do much better. Correlatively, educational romantics believe that the academic achievement of children is determined mainly by the opportunities they receive; that innate intellectual limits (if they exist at all) play a minor role; and that the current K-12 schools have huge room for improvement.

Educational romanticism characterizes reformers of both Left and Right, though in different ways. Educational romantics of the Left focus on race, class, and gender. It is children of color, children of poor parents, and girls whose performance is artificially depressed, and their academic achievement will blossom as soon as they are liberated from the racism, classism, and sexism embedded in American education. Those of the Right see public education as an ineffectual monopoly, and think that educational achievement will blossom when school choice liberates children from politically correct curricula and obdurate teachers’ unions.

In public discourse, the leading symptom of educational romanticism is silence on the role of intellectual limits even when the topic screams for their discussion. Try to think of the last time you encountered a news story that mentioned low intellectual ability as the reason why some students do not perform at grade level. I doubt if you can. Whether analyzed by the news media, school superintendents, or politicians, the problems facing low-performing students are always that they have come from disadvantaged backgrounds, or have gone to bad schools, or grown up in peer cultures that do not value educational achievement. The problem is never that they just aren’t smart enough.

The apotheosis of educational romanticism occurred on January 8, 2002, when a Republican president of the United States, surrounded by approving legislators from both parties, signed into law the No Child Left Behind Act, which had this as the Statement of Purpose for its key title:

Texas child protective services officials have said in court that the children on the YFZ Ranch were growing up in a culture that lends itself to abuse. Shurtleff said he can't reach the same conclusion.

"Let's say you're a 6-month-old girl, no evidence whatsoever of any abuse. They're simply saying, 'You, in this culture, may grow up to be a child bride when you're 14. Therefore we're going to remove you now when you're 6 months old,"' he said. "Or, 'You're a 6-month-old boy; 25, 30 years, 40 years from now you're going to be a predator, so we're going to take you away now."'

Rod Parker, a Salt Lake attorney acting as a spokesman for the FLDS, said he can agree with Shurtleff on one point.

"What Texas has done here is beyond the pale. I agree with Mark that the circumstances don't call for that kind of heavy-handed action," he said.

He’s been running downhill ever since “Proud to be americans”. Now he shows if you punch him in the nose, he bleeds. He’s got nearly as many Democrats who hate him as Republicans who hate McCain, and he’s got Republicans hating Obama more than Hillary, which is difficult to do. Honestly, I have more respect for Wright, at least he’s got the integrity to tell you exactly what he believes, and stick to it. He does not try to have it both ways like Obama, and drop something the moment it becomes obvious it’s going to poison his campaign. Wright didn’t like being dragged through the mud because of his protege’s campaign, and was only returning the favor. Somebody, American may well elect somebody like Wright, Sharpton or Farakkhan, and after all, from his point of view, everything he said was completely consistent with Black Liberation Theology, which as far as anybody can tell, is stil the basis for Obama’s faith. Maybe Phil T.N. thinks it’s entirely appropriate to have a president whose faith was founded in Cone’s book which claims that christianity must serve black people, but “bitter” America won’t buy it. Unfortunately, die hard democrats are still pushing for Obama, who looks like the sure winner, assuming he’s still swimming after the press, who have now smelled the blood in the water, is finished with him and his ex-pastor, and whatever else gets dug up in the next 3 months.
