Stockbroker Mom Disappears in Utah, Husband Questioned

Time: 12:45 AM
Josh leaves the house with Susan's phone, a generator, blankets, a gas can, tarps and a shovel. Susan's purse containing all of her credit cards, cash, identification, and keys were later located in the master bedroom undisturbed. He says that he took the boys camping at Simpson Springs Recreation Area and the Pony Express Trail

Time: 2:00 AM?
Sister Denise Cox believes 'he told them that they were going to go look for mines and I believe he buried her somewhere out wherever he went." as the Powell boys later talked how their mother went into a mine to look for crystals and never came out. The boys later drew a picture of the van and explain mother was in the trunk.

Time: 4:00 AM?
Josh claims they slept in a minivan which too small for sleeping an adults and two boys. A heater attached to a generator is an unusual setup for camping, certainly not suitable for a minvan. He claimed to be shopping for a pop-up camper, which is not suitable for cold weather.

Time: 5:00 AM
"Marty Marchant I spoke with a man that saw Josh out in the desert the following day...he had talked with the police back in December after hearing about Susan missing and that he had seen his van out in the desert in the snow. He also said that the van was trying to avoid having direct contact with his truck as the van would turn on its highbeas when his truck was to close. "

Time: 7:00 AM?
Josh and boys are seen by Robin Leanne Snyder, a worker at the Comfort Inn in Sandy Utah sneaking into the free breakfast. Charlie asks if she would like to know what happened to his mother, but Josh takes the boys away before she gets back to him.

(from Zehnder timeline)

Time  6:30 a.m.: Regular time children are dropped off to daycare

  • 7 a.m. : Debbie Caldwell, who cared for Charlie and Braden at Daydreams and Fun Things Day Care Center in West Valley for a year and a half  calls Susan on cell and at work; no answer; cell phone went straight to voice-mail

  • 8 a.m.: Debbie calls Josh' work; she was told he had not come in to work

  • 8:50 a.m. : Debbie drove to Susan's home; pounded on the door; there was no answer

  • 9 a.m.: Josh's mom, Terri, called (responding to Debbie's call - she lives with Jennifer, Josh's sister, and overheard the phone message Debbie left for Jennifer stating she could not get in contact with Josh or Susan)

  • Jennifer calls Chuck and Judy Cox in Washington to ask if they'd heard from Susan or Josh

  • Time: 1PM Monday
Police break into House: Josh sister Jennifer who lives with mother Terri and daycare friend Debbie wonder if they might have had carbon monoxide poisoning. They call police who go to the house with thiem. When no one answers, police break in through front window and enter the house. The family minivan is gone, but quickly find Susan's purse and keys. Susan doesn't have a car, as Josh made her sell it.

    Time: 2PM

Witnesses say someone who they later recognized as Josh Powell went into a South Salt Lake strip club, acting rudely and exclaiming he had at terrible day. Police later conclude there isn't enough evidence to prove it was Josh. Workers at the South Salt Lake strip club, Duces Wild, say a man they believe was Josh made sexually-explicit comments and advances, yelled, yanked away a customer's drink and ultimately didn't tip the workers when he visited the day after Susan was last seen. Bartender Liz Burkholder, who later identified Powell in several photos from police, says the man tried to make advances toward her, take her picture -- a no-no in strip clubs -- and then was rude and vulgar when she declined.

    Time: 3:02PM

  • Time: 3:02PM JOSH GETS CALL FROM JOVANNA'S SON 3:02

Joshua Powell’s next mobile phone activity was not until December 07, 2009 at 3:02 PM when he Received a phone call from Jovanna’s son’s mobile phone, Alex Owings. When Joshua Powell answered the phone Alex Owings panicked disconnected the phone and immediately advised his mother, Jovanna Owings that Joshua Powell had just answered his mobile phone.

    JOVANNA SPEAKS TO JOSH

Jovanna Owings called Joshua Powell back at 3:03 PM and spoke to Joshua Powell. Joshua Powell told her that he was out driving arotmd the West Valley City area with his two children and did not know that his wife had not shown up for work, however the Powell's have only one car and he usually drives Susan Powell to work and picks her up from work according to interviews with fiiends and family. Based from subpoena infonnation Joshua Powell’s mobile phone utilized cellular towers in
West Valley City, Utah when he spoke to J ovanna Owings.
JoVonna Owings called Josh on his cell phone. JoVonna informed Josh police were at his house, that they were looking for him and that he needed to get home. Josh told JoVonna he was driving around West Valley City and that the children, then ages 4 and 2, were with him. Josh lied, telling JoVonna that Susan was at work.

    Time: 3:34 PM

Joshua Powell then drove nearly 20 miles south out of West Valley City, Utah where he called his voicemail at 3 :34 PM. Joshua Powell then called Susan Powell’s mobile phone at 3:34 PM leaving a voice message indicating that he and their two boys had just arrived in town from their camping trip.
    Joshua Powell ends this voice message asking Susan Powell if she will need a ride home from work. {Josh obviously knows she is not at work}

    Time: 5:00 PM
It then took Josh two hours to get home.
"He just said he was driving around West Valley City," Peterson said. "He wasn't in a big hurry to get home and find his wife. It's just a really crappy situation."

JP LIES TO THAT HE IS AT WORK, THEN HE IS CAMPING 5:27
Jennifer Graves, (sister to Joshua Powell), called Joshua Powell at 5:27PM and asked him where he had been. Joshua Powell responded saying he was at work. When Jemiifer Graves told Joshua Powell she knew he was lying, Joshua Powell then changed his story telling her that he was camping. Jennifer Graves told Joshua Powell that he needed to return home that the police were there and that Susan Powell was missing. Joshua Powell asked her, how much she knew, Jennifer Graves didn’t understand why Joshua Powell asked this question and Joshua Powell disconnected.

LE CONTACTS JP BUT HE HAS TO STOP FOR FOOD? 5:48
Detective Maxwell was able to establish phone contact with Joshua Powell by using Jennifer Graves mobile phone at 5:48 PM. Detective Maxwell told Joshua Powell to return home, Joshua Powell advised he had to stop and get his children something to eat first. Detective Maxwell informed your Affiant that Joshua Powell didn’t arrive at the residence until 6:40 PM.

    Date: Dec 7, 2009 6:40 PM Monday
    after they arrive at home

LE SEES JP LIES ABOUT NOT HAVING PHONE CHARGER 6:40PM

When Joshua Powell arrived at the residence Detective Maxwell approached Joshua Powell on the passenger side of Joshua Powell’s vehicle while Joshua Powell was still in his vehicle. Detective Maxwell asked Joshua Powell why he didn’t answer his mobile phone or call anyone earlier in the day. Joshua Powell told Detective Maxwell that he had to keep his mobile phone off to preserve the battery that he didn’t have a phone charger. Detective Maxwell clearly saw Joshua Powell’s mobile phone sitting on the center console plugged into a cigarette lighter phone charger.

Steven Powell version:Steven told PEOPLE that Josh had a conversation with police the night after Susan disappeared, and that, “The ‘interview’ turned into a marathon interrogation of about 10 hours. He told them everything he knew.”

Anon sources says they were back by 9PM: an anonymous source told Examiner.com that neighbors watched as Josh arrive at his home between 5 and 6 p.m. the day Susan was reported missing.
He had allegedly been camping with his boys in the West Utah desert. He claimed he last saw Susan the night before, around midnight, and left to go camping at around 12:30 a.m.
When he returned home between 5 and 6 p.m. the following evening, Dec. 7, police were there waiting for him. They had already suspected foul play when they saw two large fans aimed at a wet spot on the carpet and Susan's purse and keys in her bedroom and wanted to take Josh in for questioning.
Josh, police, and the two children, Charlie and Braden, left shortly after Josh and the boys returned home.
Date: December 7, 2009 Time: 9PM  Josh and children back from police station
Josh's neighbors contacted Examiner.com's source around 9:30 p.m. that evening and said Josh, the children, and police all returned to the house shortly after 9 p.m.
According to neighbors, police went into the house for a few moments with Josh and the kids. They said police then came out of the house and drove away, leaving Josh and the children alone all night. http://www.examiner.com/headlines-in-seattle/where-is-susan-powell-her-father-law-thinks-she-s-having-a-fling-hopes-she-ll-land-on-her-feet-1#ixzz1mP5dr6rs

Police have interviewed [Josh] and the 4-year-old boy, but did not release any details.

    Summary:

    ========================================================================
    Date: December 7, 2009 Midnight

Josh says Susan went to bed at midnight. Did he tell her they would be camping?
Her husband, Josh Powell, is the last known person to see her when she went to bed at midnight. He told police and media that just after Susan went to bed he took their two young sons, then ages 2 and 4, on an overnight camping trip.http://www.examiner.com/headlines-in-seattle/where-is-susan-powell-her-father-law-thinks-she-s-having-a-fling-hopes-she-ll-land-on-her-feet-1#ixzz1mP6GUlme

    Susan Approved Camping Trip

On 12/8/11 a follow up interview with Mr. Powell was conducted telephonically Mr. Powell clarified that on the evening on 12.06.09 when he had decided to take the boys camping he indicated his wife was "ok with it". He noted that her biggest concern was that the boys stayed warm. Mr. Powell estimated that the Pony Express trailhead was less than 40 miles out of town.

Josh Washed the Couch and Set Up Fans

He referenced that prior to the leaving the family home he had "washed" the couch and placed a fan nearby to dry it. He noted "Susan did not like running machines. She would rather use scissors to trim the lawn instead of a weed whacker. We made and agreement, that I would wash the couch and she would shovel the walkway. Mr.Powll was uncertain about what his wife had been doing the last time he saw her but the was "on herway to bed"

Powell told Manley that his wife was "OK with it," when he decided to take his children camping the night his wife disappeared, claiming her biggest concern was that the children be kept warm. "He referenced that prior to leaving the family home he had 'washed' the couch and placed a fan nearby to dry it," Manley wrote. "He noted 'Susan did not like running machines. She would rather use scissors to trim the lawn instead of a weed whacker. We made an agreement, that I would wash the couch and she would shovel the walkway.' Mr. Powell was uncertain about what his wife had been doing the last time he saw her but that she was 'on her way to bed.' "

Steve Powell says Susan decided to clean the carpets, probably juice (How does Steve, who was in Washington State, know so much about this house??)

As for the wet spot police found on the carpet of Josh and Susan Powell's home the day after her disappearance, Steve Powell said his daughter-in-law had decided to clean the carpets. There was a red spot on the carpet underneath the couch, he said. "It was probably juice or something," Steve Powell said.
While searching the house, investigators found two fans drying a wet area on the rug, where a red stain had been removed. Josh Powell said that his wife had been cleaning the rug before she disappeared

    Date: Dec 7, 2009 12:00 Midnight Monday
    After Midnight Camping Trip

It looks like Josh did take his family for a midnight camping trip, but while told  the police that  Susan was sleeping at home, the boys seem to have the impression that mother Susan was in the trunk with them, went out into the mines to look for gems, and she did not make it back.

from search warrant, this is pretty much how Josh left the house, and he took Susan's phone with him in the van, odd that Susan would run off without her phone, keys, wallet, id or anything. Joshua Powell provided consent to search his vehicle and residence. During the search of the vehicle a generator, blankets, a gas can, tarps and a shovel were located. Susan Powell's cellular phone was located in the center front console in the off position. Joshua Powell voluntarily gave Detective Maxwell, Susan Powell's cellular phone, however we later discovered it was missing the digital sim card. Joshua Powell did not have an answer as to why Susan Powell's cellular phone was in the vehicle. During the search of the residence, two fans were set up and blowing onto the living room sofa that appeared to have just been cleaned. Joshua Powell advised Detective Maxwell during the interview that he cleaned the sofa on Sunday, December 06, 2009 prior to leaving on his camping trip because Susan told him to. Also, during the search of the residence Susan's purse containing all of her credit cards, cash, identification, and keys was located in the master bedroom undisturbed.

Stockbroker Mom Disappears in Utah, Husband Questioned

Josh woke them up after they were asleep to go camping.
Josh indicated that he decided in the middle of the night (when he and Susan both had to be at work the next day) to wake the boys up from their sound sleep (after they had already been sledding from 5 pm to 8 pm that night) to go on a camping trip in the wilderness Examiner.com http://www.examiner.com/headlines-in-seattle/where-is-susan-powell-her-father-law-thinks-she-s-having-a-fling-hopes-she-ll-land-on-her-feet-1#ixzz1mP1CHkOK

OK, let's think up a way Josh's story could be true: He gets into a huge late night fight with his wife (maybe he even hits her) and he takes the kids out of the house to show her who is boss. She decides it is time to give up on the marriage and get out of town. Since he allegedly kept the car keys from her, she decides to hitchhike out of town. She gets picked up by the wrong person, and something terrible happens to her. Josh returns home, finds her missing, and when he can't contact her, he freaks out and tries to hide evidence of their fight the night before and refuses to help the police. This makes for good fiction, but in real life Susan would have called her parents to tell them what she was doing. She would have packed a bag and taken a few lightweight keepsakes. She might have called a battered womens' shelter or something like that. She would probably have left a note, maybe for her kids. It just doesn't hold water.
Mr. Cox needs to stop dreaming and realize that Susan is DEAD!!! Get the FBI involved and Mr. Cox get some balls will you...you are so wimpy about all of this....go after these bastards (Josh & more than likely his daddy Steven) that obvious to everyone except you and your family that they KILLED Susan! Now GO GET THOSE MURDERING MONSTERS!

Joshua Powell... you are a coward and an @$$! No one but your idiot father believes you!
CPS needs to be doing private interviews with those children, ASAP!

In this version, Susan was busy cleaning the carpet, not getting ready for bed when they left home: He said he took the boys camping at Simpson Springs Recreation Area, leaving his wife at home, where she was busily working to remove a red stain from the carpet. http://newsfeed.time.com/2012/02/07/timeline-the-powell-familys-tragic-two-years/#ixzz1mO1ONTC2

(sister) Denise Cox speculates that Josh Powell drugged his sister before her death.
"I believe he drugged her so it didn't seem unnatural for the boys when he took her," she said.
"I believe he told them that they were going to go look for mines and I believe he buried her somewhere out wherever he went."
Cox said from what she gathers from her parents, the Powell boys had been talking about how their mother went into a mine to look for crystals and never came out.
“A neighbor reported he heard the Powell’s car alarm go off at around 11 p.m. for about two minutes - that’s a very long time late at night. I’m surprised no one called the police. Women are taught to push the panic button to raise attention in an emergency situation and I have always wondered if that’s what Susan did the night she went missing.”
“I feel like Susan stepped into a black hole. I just can’t see Josh doing anything physically to hurt her. But then again people do things you wouldn’t expect them to, so who’s to say.”
“Whatever it is that’s happened to Susan, I don’t believe it something she’s doing. It’s something being done to her. She wouldn’t leave her kids - it’s not in her to walk away from her children.”
One of Susan Powell's sons drew a picture of her in the trunk of the family car with father Josh Powell at the steering wheel, according to Susan's father and a family attorney. In interviews with PEOPLE, Powell's dad Chuck Cox said he believed it was younger son Braden who drew the picture, while lawyer Steve Downing said it was older son Charlie.
Chris Jones: What can you tell us about that night? From what we understand you went camping and then came home. Tell us what happened that night?
Josh Powell: Yeah, I just, a lot of times I just go camping with my boys. Nothing big, we just go overnight and we do S'mores and stuff like that. And so I just went with the boys and was planning to do some S'Mores in the morning and then when we got home, um, well on the way home I found out that people were worried about us that we were missing.
Chris Jones: The report is that neither you nor your wife called in sick and they said that's not usual. What are your thoughts on that?
Josh Powell: No, it's not usual. I ….
Chris Jones: Why didn't you call in sick?
Josh Powell: You know, I somehow was thinking it was Sunday. I didn't go to church and I just missed a day and thought we'd come back Sunday.
Chris Jones: So you got confused on what day it was?
    Josh Powell: Yeah.
Chris Jones: Now, from what we understand there's nothing, it appears there's no foul play in the home. It appears your wife left her cell phone and purse. Do you have any idea … I mean, does she go off to clear head? Do you have any idea where she could be?
Josh Powell: No, she'll leave during the day but she's never left overnight.
Chris Jones: Does she have any enemies you can think of?
Josh Powell: No, I can't think of anyone.
Chris Jones: Now there's been a lot of talk on the Internet. Obviously in cases like this you, and you know this, that they talk about the husband, that he did something. Do you want to address that?
Josh Powell: I didn't do anything. I mean, I don't know where she's at. I don't even know where to start looking.
Chris Jones: And the boys, what do you tell them about their mom?
Josh Powell: I haven't told them anything. I mean, they've overheard stuff. By the time it all started I was already, it was already late and we went to bed.
Chris Jones: Now your wife laid down that night, she wasn't feeling well. That's when you went camping, right? Where did you guys go camping?
Josh Powell: She wasn't not feeling well. She was feeling well but she just went to bed.
Chris Jones: About 5ish? Is that what we heard? We heard 5, you'd know better than we would.
Josh Powell: No, she went to be that night.
Chris Jones: And what time did you go camping would you say?
Josh Powell: You know, I got out to a pretty late start.
Chris Jones: 9ish, something like that?
Josh Powell: No, it was later. Basically, I'm just trying to figure out what I can do and both try to find her and take care of life in general.
Chris Jones: Where did you guys camp?
Josh Powell: We went down south to some trails down there.
Chris Jones: Do you mean like Moab?
Josh Powell: No, no, we, um, we actually just went down to the Pony Express.
    Chris Jones: Pony Express Trail?
    Josh Powell: Yeah.
Chris Jones: Are there campgrounds down there?
Josh Powell: I, guess I better go.
Good luck to you, we appreciate your time.

Josh and Boys Slept in Minivan

Josh claims they slept in a minivan (3 hr drive there and back, they had free breakfast at 6:30, when would they have time to sleep? Did he even have a tent? Did they sleep in the minivan camping before? Miniva is too small for sleeping two adults, two boys. He did not have heater or generator before. Claimed to be shopping for a pop-up camper) src: Examiner.com http://www.examiner.com/crime-in-national/witness-captures-photos-of-josh-powell-s-home-flames-after-explosion-photos#ixzz1mNyDpJ3g

I hope that this all comes true and the Cox family can be at peace. I hope she is found this Easter weekend. God bless."

I was talking with a man yesterday about the search for Susan coming up April 10th and he stated that he had talked with the police back in December after hearing about Susan missing and that he had seen his van out in the desert in the snow. He also said that the van was trying to avoid having direct contact with his truck as the van would turn on its highbeems when his truck was to close. Where did you hear about my post? Event: Breakfast at the Comfort Inn

Woman says she spoke to Susan Powell's son Charlie on day she vanished

... woman says Charlie Powell spoke to her, asking her a haunting question. Robin Snyder, who works at the Comfort Inn in Sandy, Ut., said Wednesday on HLN's 'Prime News' that she contacted authorities about the interaction she had with one of Josh's children a few weeks after she heard about the case of the missing woman. She told show host Vinnie Politan that she was overseeing the breakfast offered hotel guests and went to get a high chair for Braden Powell, who was just 2-years-old at the time. Snyder said Charlie, then 4, looked at her and asked if she knew what happened to his mother. She told him “no” and then asked what happened. Snyder noted that Josh kept his face down as Charlie spoke.Examiner.com http://www.examiner.com/crime-in-national/woman-says-she-spoke-to-susan-powell-s-son-charlie-on-day-she-vanished#ixzz1nEfxzNkD

Deaths lead to tips on Susan Powell THE ASSOCIATED PRESS 02/16/12

Some of the new information Utah police detectives received came from a hotel worker in Sandy, 17 miles south of Salt Lake City, who told them Josh Powell and the boys showed up for a continental breakfast the day Susan Powell was reported missing. The worker, Robin Leanne Snyder, 53, oversaw the free breakfast for guests at the Comfort Inn there. She called a tip line set up by police after Susan Powell’s disappearance began to make news, but she never heard back, she said. “Charlie looked right up at me and he says, ‘Do you know what happened to my mom?’ So I say, ‘No, what happened to your mom?’” Snyder told The Associated Press on Tuesday. She never got an answer. She was called to fetch coffee for guests, and when she returned, Josh Powell – who had kept his face down as his older boy spoke up unexpectedly – had left with his boys. “He didn’t even give the kids time to eat their sweet rolls - each had a small bite on them,” she said. It wasn’t until two weeks ago that a West Valley detective interviewed her, she said. By then, the hotel’s security tapes for the day had been recycled.

Debbie Caldwell, who cared for Charlie and Braden at Daydreams and Fun Things Day Care Center in West Valley for a year and a half ... Caldwell searched for the Powell family when the boys failed to show up at day care in 2009 — the first step that sparked the ongoing missing person case of their mother, Susan Powell... I have always felt that ... because I was the first to go looking for all the Powells that morning ... I wanted to always be able to tell them that I never quit looking for their mom," she said, noting she participated in multiple community-organized desert searches for the woman. Caldwell recently visited the Powell boys in Washington, where she played in a field with the children near the home of their maternal grandparents, Chuck and Judy Cox. She’d worried about the boys’ health and safety in the care of their father, especially after Josh Powell moved in with his father. Caldwell said she knew Susan Powell disliked her father-in-law

Event: Neighbors and Employers look for Josh and Susan

Neighbors and employers were calling all day to get ahold of Josh and Susan. Did they come back on monday or tuesday??

A day care worker becomes alarmed when the Powells fail to drop off their two kids at the center. She calls Joshua's parents, who then call the police. The police break into their home and find no one. However, they did notice two fans were blowing on a wet spot. Now it's said that a carpet cleaner was found in the house. (cleaning blood from carpet? Did they test for blood? When did he rent carpet cleaner? Josh later says the stain was red, did the police notice any stain or color? No metion of this in press accounts)
She was reported missing the next day after she failed to show up for her stockbroker job. She had been seen by friends at church and at dinner the day before.

The hours after Susan Powell's disappearance

    March 9th, 2010 @ 11:35am
Story compiled with contributions from Andrew Adams and Shara Park.

KSL Newsradio has learned Josh Powell may have spent time at a strip club, just hours after Susan Powell was reported missing. But despite numerous eyewitness accounts, police are skeptical (why?? - are the police in on it?) that the man was indeed JoshPowell.

"He wanted me to come over and bend down so he could see my boobs, kept telling me I had a nice [behind], telling me to come down there, he wouldn't hurt me, bend over," Burkholder said in an exclusive interview with KSL Newsradio. "At first it was advances, and then when I wouldn't go back down there it was just rude and vulgar… It was embarrassing because that's not normal -- even in a strip club. I stayed away from him as much as possible."

The alleged appearance at the club happened the afternoon of Dec. 7, when police were still looking for Susan, Josh and their two children. They had been reported missing that morning after a day care provider grew concerned because the children had not been dropped off on schedule. Josh showed up to his home with the kids between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. that evening.

The man strip club employees identified as Powell came in around 2 p.m. wearing a hat. He ordered two beers and a shot and left after about an hour-and-a-half to two hours. Burkholder says customers moved away from him and actually applauded as he walked out the door.

His behavior was "outlandish," club owner Rydell Mitchell said.

"Yelling out loud, saying weird things," Mitchell described. "He yelled at one of my customers and said, ‘You don't know what it's like -- you don't have any idea what kind of day I've had.'"

Burkholder says Powell later grabbed a drink from another patron.

"Acting really peculiar like that -- it just made everybody really uncomfortable," Mitchell said.

Mitchell says he wasn't sure if the man identified as Powell was there for the drinks or the dancers, but he believes it was for both.

"He didn't sit on the stage or anything like that. I guess he wasn't tipping the girls, from what I do understand," Mitchell said. "Not sure if he was sitting over by the bar and maybe watching them -- trying to get a free show."

Burkholder says a customer later recognized Powell on the news and called West Valley police. She says investigators showed up several days after the ordeal.

"I wouldn't want the authorities finding out I was in a strip club the day after my wife came up missing," said former police officer and UtahDetective.com owner David Lundberg.

Lundberg says the alleged encounter raises suspicion, although the question remains how much this may add to the investigation.

"The circumstances as far as the lighting in a club like that, the sound, the noise, where he was moving around, how well people actually paid attention to him -- eyewitness evidence has been thrown out because it's not as positive as they'd like to see it," he said.

West Valley Police Captain Tom McLachlan says the tip was investigated and the statements of the eyewitnesses "were taken into account." Tuesday he said based on eyewitness accounts alone, they cannot confirm it was Josh.

"I'm not trying to discredit the individuals involved but sometimes, you know, eyewitness accounts can be mistaken, so you can't rely wholly on that," McLachlan said. "You try to verify, and at this point we are not able to verify though independent means that that was Josh."

Mitchell says surveillance cameras were not working in the club at the time.

"I don't have any idea why anybody would say something like that," Powell's attorney, Scott Williams, told KSL Monday. "We have no need to respond."

Powell has said he took the children camping near Simpson Springs and the Pony Express Trail in Tooele County beginning around 12:30 a.m. the morning of Dec. 7. His alleged appearance at Duces Wild would have been more than 13 hours after that time and roughly one to two hours before he returned home with the children.

Police doubt story of Josh Powell at strip club
Employees say he was in bar on the day his wife disappeared

SOUTH SALT LAKE — West Valley police say they doubt a man seen at a strip club on the day Susan Cox Powelldisappeared was her husband.

"We're aware (of the story). We investigated it. We talked to the people involved. We don't feel that was Josh (Powell)," said West Valley Police Capt. Tom McLachlan.
On Dec. 7, a man walked into Duces Wild, 2750 S. 300 West, and acted very belligerent.

"He was just being real loud and making a nuisance of himself," said club co-owner Kimberly Cooper. "He was saying things like, 'You don't know what kind of day I've had.' "

The man, who was wearing a beanie cap, was loud, tried to drink other patrons' drinks and, at one point, was questioned by other patrons about whether he was taking photographs inside the club with his cell phone, a violation of club rules,

"He stood out because he was being annoying to everybody," Cooper said. "Everyone applauded when he left."

When he wasn't walking around, the man sat at the bar by himself, mumbling, and then burst out yelling without warning, Cooper said.

"We call it bar Tourette's," she said.

The man yelled several times at a female bartender and made vulgar comments toward her. There were a handful of people in the bar at the time, Cooper said, most of them regular patrons. This man was not.

The man was in the club between 4 and 5 p.m., Cooper said. Other patrons from the club have told KSL Radio that the man was in the bar about 2 p.m.

Police say Josh Powell showed up at his West Valley house about 5 p.m. on that day, after he said he had gone camping in remote Tooele County with his two young boys. He said he had last seen his wife about 17 hours earlier.

Security cameras at the club were not working that day. No one noticed or can remember a van in the club parking lot, let alone one with two young children inside, Cooper said.

As a new state law requires, the club scans drivers' licenses of patrons as they enter. Cooper said the man who entered that afternoon would have had his license scanned. That data is stored in the machine for seven days, she said.

After Susan Powell's disappearance began to make headlines, one of the bartenders and at least two patrons remembered the belligerent man who was in the bar days earlier. Police were called and detectives went to the club and to the homes of some of those witnesses to interview them, Cooper said. They were too late to check the scanning device. But no one that day can remember checking an ID that said "Josh Powell," she said.

Cooper said there were at least three people who took close notice of the man. One was the bartender. She told the co-owner that she picked Josh Powell out of a photo lineup that police gave her at her house.

"She said, 'This was the guy who was in the bar making such an a-- of himself,' " Cooper said. "She said she positively ID'd him. She said she 'was sure' that was him."

One of the patrons, however, told Cooper that he was only mostly sure now that it was Powell but not 100 percent convinced. A third regular patron, she said, did not believe the man was Josh Powell, saying that this man's hair was longer than Josh Powell's.

Based on what she has heard from employees and patrons in her club, Cooper admitted Tuesday that she had her doubts, and with the beanie cap the man was wearing that day, it could have been a case of mistaken identity.

"I'm concerned maybe it wasn't him," she said. "There is a kid that comes in here once in a while that looks an awful lot like him."

Shelby Gifford, family spokeswoman for Chuck and Judy Cox, Susan Cox Powell's parents, had very little to say about the strip club story.

"Until something is substantiated, we're not going to comment on it," she said.

Josh Powell's attorney, Scott Williams, also declined comment.

"I don't have any idea why anybody would say something like that," he told KSL. "We have no need to respond."

Susan Cox Powell was last seen early on Dec. 7. About 12:30 a.m., Josh Powell said he took his two young boys camping in a remote area of Tooele County. Temperatures that night were below freezing. Police were called later that afternoon when neither Powell showed up for work and their children were not dropped off at day care. When Josh Powell returned home, police were already at his house investigating.

Powell remains the sole person of interest in his wife's disappearance.
